Afghanistan and Iraq, December 2010

I’m late with this post because I was out of town for a few days earlier this week and it put me off-schedule. The year ended on a slightly improved note in Afghanistan, but a single month doesn’t make a trend. 2010 saw 499 US and 711 coalition military deaths in Afghanistan, far more than…

Afghanistan and Iraq

The notable Afghanistan news stories this month were that we’ve been negotiating with an impostor and that we’ve broken the Soviets’ record for sustained futility. Not so well-reported was that the military death rate didn’t drop off the way it did this time last year. Iraq, at least, is staying low.

Afghanistan and Iraq, October 2010

No improvement in Afghanistan (not that I was expecting any): We’re killing 1-2 Americans every day in a war that hasn’t had a purpose in years. Did a single candidate campaign to stop this? And Iraq is bumping along more or less as it has been for a year:

Afghanistan and Iraq, September 2010

Was late in putting this post together this month. You remember the wars, don’t you?

Afghanistan and Iraq, August 2010

Military deaths were down a bit in Afghanistan this past month, but not much Coalition deaths passed the 2000 mark, with little more than a brief mention in the news. I can’t stand thinking that the man I voted for is prolonging this war because of domestic politics, but I don’t know what else to…

Afghanistan and Iraq, July 2010

It’s time to exhale. President Obama’s speech today closed the door on the possibility that the withdrawal from Iraq would be postponed. I’ve been half expecting some violent incident or request from the Iraqi government to upset the schedule, but I don’t see how that could happen now. There will still be casualties among the…

Iraq and Afghanistan, June 2010

The big Afghanistan news of the last couple of weeks was Gen. McChrystal and his aides having a few too many Bud Lite Limes and talking out of turn. Not in the news was the big jump in US and coalition casualties. More US deaths, and far more coalition deaths, last month than in any…

Iraq and Afghanistan, May 2010

US military deaths in Iraq stayed about where they’ve been for the last year. Both US and coalition deaths in Afghanistan jumped back up after a couple of months of modest decrease. Whatever we’re doing in Afghanistan, it doesn’t seem to be working. As I’ve said before, that this war was justified in 2001 doesn’t…

Iraq and Afghanistan, April 2010

I can’t think of anything I haven’t already said on this topic.

Iraq and Afghanistan, March 2010

As expected, US and coalition military deaths in Iraq stayed low last month: Coalition deaths passed the 4700 mark, and US deaths are slowly approaching 4400. (The two numbers are moving in parallel now; there haven’t been any non-US coalition deaths for over a year.) In Afghanistan, US and coalition military deaths went down a…
