Afghanistan, January 2013

January was the best month since 2008.
It pains me to say I’m happy to see the casualty rate back to where it was in the Bush administration, but there it is. I hope to live long enough to see a Democratic president who isn’t afraid of looking “soft.” Obama handled Libya well, but trying to correct the uncorrectable mistake we made when we jumped from Afghanistan to Iraq was a tragic mistake. It doesn’t matter that he had cover from the Republican establishment and the great David Petraeus;1 he should’ve know better.

I can’t tell you how relieved I am to know that we’ll be spared the Presidential campaign of General All-In. ↩

Amen. That is all.

Yeah, it’s now looking like Petraeus was mainly a great PR maven but not really a fantastic general. Unfortunately I don’t think Obama can shift the blame as he ran in 07 about putting attention back on “the good war.” Say what one will about Bush’s many mistakes including some atrocious ones in Afghanistan, but it appears like he always knew Afghanistan wasn’t really “winnable” in any normal way.
